What Instacart Shoppers Actually Do

Instacart shoppers are not warehouse workers filling pre-sorted bins. Each order involves genuine real-time effort:

• Drive to the store at their own gas expense
• Navigate a full-size grocery store picking every item on your list
• Make real-time substitution decisions when items are out of stock
• Communicate with you via the app about changes and confirmations
• Check produce quality (they know you will be unhappy with brown bananas)
• Bag items appropriately — cold with cold, fragile items separated
• Load bags into their personal vehicle
• Drive to your address and deliver to your door (or up stairs)

On a 40-item order, this process typically takes 60–90 minutes start to finish. At $5 tip on a $100 order, you are paying roughly $3–5/hour for that labor — well below minimum wage once you account for gas and wear. At 15–20%, you are closer to fair market compensation.

When to Tip More Than 20%

Standard situations call for 15–20%. A few circumstances justify going higher:

Heavy or Bulky Items

Cases of water, cat litter, large bags of dog food, or a 30-pack of beverages add significant physical strain and weight to the delivery. Add an extra $2–5 for heavy orders.

Large Orders

A $250+ grocery order requires significantly more time in the store than a $60 order. Scale your tip accordingly — 15% of $250 is $37.50, which is appropriate.

Bad Weather

Rain, snow, extreme heat — shoppers are driving and delivering in conditions you chose to avoid by ordering delivery. Add $3–5 in bad weather.

Difficult Delivery Location

Third-floor walkup with no elevator, long driveway, or a building with complicated entry — add $2–5 for access difficulty.

Tipping In-App vs. Cash

Both work, but there are important differences:

In-App Tip

Instacart passes 100% of the in-app tip to the shopper — the platform takes no cut of tips. You can add or adjust the tip up to 24 hours after delivery if the order was exceptional (or disappointing). Pre-set tips are visible to shoppers before they accept an order, so a higher tip increases the chance your order gets picked up quickly.

Cash

Cash at the door is also appreciated and goes directly to the shopper. Some shoppers prefer cash because it is immediate and guaranteed. If you tip cash, you should still set the in-app tip to $0 explicitly (rather than leaving the default) and note in delivery instructions that you will tip in cash.

The 15–20% / $5 minimum standard applies to other grocery delivery services as well:

• Shipt — Same model as Instacart. 15–20% in-app.
• Walmart+ (Spark Delivery) — Tip 15–20%. Spark drivers are independent contractors, not Walmart employees.
• Amazon Fresh — Amazon's own delivery staff. Tip 15–20% in the app.
• DoorDash Grocery — Same DoorDash drivers doing grocery runs. Standard 15–20%.

Instacart Shoppers and the OBBBA No Tax on Tips

Instacart shoppers who receive tips as part of their income may qualify for the OBBBA Schedule 1-A Part II deduction — the no tax on tips provision that allows tipped workers to deduct up to $25,000 in tip income per year from federal taxes.

Instacart shoppers are independent contractors, and their tips are reported as self-employment income. The IRS has clarified that the deduction applies to tip income received in the course of work in a customarily tipped occupation — which includes delivery and personal shopping services.
